What’s a Wire EDM?
The simple definition of Wire EDM (also known as “spark EDM”) is machining by creating sparks in a thin metal wire by conducting electricity through de-ionized water, enabling the wire to cut through metal by using the heat from the sparks. Although the process sounds simple, Wire EDM produces amazing results!
Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is an example of how Toolmasters, Inc. stays in step with new technologies. Over the last 15 years, Wire EDM has grown exponentially in popularity and is today a standard machining technology. Toolmasters was one of the first shops in the Midwest to purchase and apply Wire EDM to die making. We purchased our first machine over 30 years ago, in 1978.

Improved Quality: Wire EDM eliminates tool breakage. It can cut through extremely hard materials, such as Titanium and Carbide, process these extremely hard materials to close tolerances and achieve intricate shapes too difficult to produce with conventional cutting tools.
